Memory Reset / RAM Clear

There seems to be no official name for this handy technique that kills running apps and clears RAM (memory). This often fixes mis-behaving audio and MIDI apps and is quicker than powering down or forcing a completely restart.

It is useful to do before starting a music session or if you run into problems that might be caused by memory leaks or zombies.

  • Long-press the power button until you are presented with the screen that says “slide to power off”.
  • Long-press the home button until the “slide to power off” screen is dismissed.
  1. Create a virtual Home button using AssistiveTouch: Go to Settings > General > Accessibility > AssistiveTouch and turn AssistiveTouch on. A virtual Home button appears on-screen.
  2. Press and hold either volume button and the Top button for several seconds until the 'slide to power off' slider appears. OR go into Settings > General, scroll all the way to the bottom and tap Shut Down to get the 'slide to power off' slider to appear.
  3. Long-press the virtual Home button after getting the 'slide to power off' slider to appear.

TIP: Via the accessibility settings, set your 3 power button click shortcut to bring up (and then re-hide) the virtual home button. With this set up you can do a memory clear with a 2018 Pro in under 10 seconds.
